Kennerly’s approach to large-format fine prints is to transform the work into an individual artistic work. President Nixon’s departure from the White House after resigning as president is an example of that transformation. When he knew that a single image could not relay the full drama of that historic event, he chose to print the entire proof sheet from that event at 40”x 60,” making each individual frame 7 x 9.” This presentation allows viewers to experience Nixon’s entire departure from moment to moment. Similarly, combining three images of marching soldiers from China’s 50th celebration of the Peoples’ Republic of China into a single triptych that he calls “That Good Ole’ Red, White, and Blue,” tells a stronger story about both nations. Kennerly also feels that enlarging intimate moments into life-size proportions such as Nixon with a pixie-like expression as he plays the piano at the Grand Old Opry, or Betty Ford dancing on the White House Cabinet Room table, or pylons disappearing into their reflection on a frosty winter morning, reveals the character of that moment with a power and immediacy that might be lost otherwise.
